Creating lasting change takes more than one organization. It takes a community willing to show up for one another. On October 11, BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda joined Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital and Bbaale Health Center IV for the National Mental Health Run, under the theme “Run for Your Mind. Break the Silence. End the Stigma.” While […]

Most people see football as a way to improve passing, ball control, speed, or teamwork. At BaNgaAfayo, we see something more. We see an opportunity to start conversations that many young youth rarely have but desperately need. At Suuka Islamic Center for education in Kayunga District, young youth aged 15 to 25 took part in […]
When people think about education, they imagine desks, textbooks, and blackboards. We imagine a football pitch. Not because every child dreams of becoming a professional footballer. But because we’ve seen something remarkable happen there. On the football fields of Kiwooza Primary School in Kayunga District, children aged 6 to 12 are discovering that the game […]

For many girls in rural Kayunga, menstruation remains a barrier to education. Our current focus is on intentionally strengthening, evaluating, and documenting the long-term impact of our Cradle-to-Career approach — ensuring that every child we serve moves from vulnerability to stability, dignity, and opportunity. We are building not just programs, but proof of transformation
By 2025, 80% of our intended Cradle-to-Career programs were operational at the community center. We continued refining, testing, and strengthening interventions to determine what works best for rural communities. The focus shifted from launching programs to strengthening quality and measurable impact.
Truth Design Academy was officially incorporated as a social enterprise under Ba Nga Afayo. The Academy was later recognized by the Olympism Innovation Hub for its regenerative finance model — equipping young people with market-relevant creative and digital skills while reinvesting revenue to sustain community programs. This marked a major step toward long-term financial independence […]
After years of integrated programming, we recognized that our work had naturally evolved into what is globally known as a Cradle-to-Career model — a coordinated, long-term approach supporting children from early childhood through education and into employment. While we had been practicing this model intuitively for years, 2024 marked the moment we formally named, refined, […]
Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda was formally registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States, enabling our growing community of U.S.-based individual donors to support our work more seamlessly through tax-deductible contributions. This milestone strengthened our international governance, accountability systems, and long-term financial sustainability while expanding our global network of supporters.
As programs expanded, operations officially began within our still-unfinished community center — transforming it into a living laboratory for innovation, testing, and integrated service delivery. What started as a construction site became the heartbeat of our holistic model.
Ba Nga Afayo partnered with Global Fund for Children under the Partnership to Educate All Kids (PEAK) initiative. Through this collaboration, we supported children to heal, learn through play, and overcome educational barriers intensified by the COVID-19 crisis.
We launched Magical Classrooms, a home-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiative addressing the severe shortage of early learning opportunities in rural Kayunga — a challenge worsened by teacher attrition during the pandemic. This marked our intentional expansion into the early years, recognizing that learning foundations begin long before primary school.
Ba Nga Afayo partnered with Sports Works International to strengthen and professionalize our Sports for Development programming, improving structure, safeguarding, and long-term athlete development.
In response to rising youth idleness and vulnerability during lockdowns, we launched our Sports for Development program, using structured sport as a tool for engagement, mentorship, life skills development, and psychosocial wellbeing. Sports became a powerful pathway for healing, discipline, teamwork, and leadership.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Ba Nga Afayo pivoted to emergency relief efforts, providing food support, psychosocial care, and essential assistance to children and families during prolonged school closures. This period strengthened our resilience and deepened community trust.
Recognizing the need for comprehensive and coordinated support, Ba Nga Afayo broke ground to construct a multipurpose community center. This space was envisioned as a hub for integrated programs in education, health, economic empowerment, leadership development, and family support — addressing the interconnected realities shaping children’s lives.
Our first cohort of eight fully sponsored students sat for their Primary Leaving Examinations. Despite years of consistent academic support, none advanced to secondary school. This pivotal moment reshaped our thinking. We realized that access alone was not enough. Academic success required holistic, multidimensional support addressing mental health, family stability, economic realities, and learning environments. […]
Operating from a modest and outdated facility, Ba Nga Afayo expanded its support systems to ensure children had what they needed to remain in school. Programs included school lunches, tuition support, and provision of sanitary pads for adolescent girls. Despite limited infrastructure, our commitment to removing barriers to education continued to grow stronger.
Our founder, Joseph, was formally recognized by the Rotaract Club of Kampala Central for outstanding service, selfless leadership, and exceptional dedication to supporting former street children, orphans, and families living in extreme poverty in Uganda. This recognition affirmed the credibility and grassroots impact of Ba Nga Afayo’s early work within the broader community.
We officially launched our Child Sponsorship Program, enrolling 80 children into long-term support. Alongside sponsorship, we provided temporary shelter, counseling, and mental health support to homeless and highly vulnerable children within the community. This expansion reflected a growing understanding that children needed stability, psychosocial support, and safe environments — not just school fees — to […]
Our flagship Back to School program was launched, supporting over 500 children with essential school supplies and removing immediate barriers to education access. These early interventions marked the beginning of our shift from emergency response to sustained, relationship-based support.
Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda was officially incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee, founded with a single, urgent mission: to ensure that out-of-school children return to the classroom and that those at risk are supported to stay and succeed. From the very beginning, our work was rooted in place… walking alongside vulnerable children and […]
