Stronger Together: Building a Mentally Healthy Kayunga Through Collaboration

Creating lasting change takes more than one organization. It takes a community willing to show up for one another.

On October 11, BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda joined Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital and Bbaale Health Center IV for the National Mental Health Run, under the theme “Run for Your Mind. Break the Silence. End the Stigma.”

While the day brought people together through running, plays, and community dialogues, its deeper meaning went beyond the activities. It was a reminder that improving mental health and well being in Kayunga requires all of us to play our part.

For BaNgaAfayo, showing up was not simply about participating in an event. It was about recognizing the value of working alongside others who share a commitment to building healthier, stronger communities.

Every Partner Has a Role to Play

No single organization can address every challenge facing children, young people, and families. Each stakeholder brings different knowledge, experience, resources, and expertise to the table. When these strengths come together, they create opportunities for greater impact.

Health facilities help communities access health information, services, and professional support. Community organizations like BaNgaAfayo create spaces where children and young people can learn, grow, build relationships, and access psychosocial support. Other local stakeholders bring their own networks, knowledge, and community connections.

These contributions are not separate efforts working in isolation. They are pieces of a bigger picture, helping communities access the support they need at different stages of life.

By working together, we can reach more people, strengthen community awareness, challenge stigma, and encourage people experiencing mental health challenges to seek help without fear or shame.

Strengthening the Power of Place in Kayunga

At BaNgaAfayo, our Cradle-to-Career approach recognizes that a child’s development extends beyond the classroom. Education, health and wellness, child protection, girls’ empowerment, sports, technology, and employment all contribute to helping children and young people reach their potential.

But we also recognize that this work does not happen in isolation.

Building a stronger Kayunga means connecting our efforts with those of health facilities, community organizations, schools, local leaders, and other stakeholders who are working toward a shared future.

This is the power of place: recognizing the strengths that already exist within Kayunga and bringing them together to create opportunities, address local challenges, and improve the well being of the people who call it home.

We do not have to do everything ourselves. We have to understand what we bring, appreciate what others bring, and find meaningful ways to work together.

Showing Up for Each Other Is Where Change Begins

The National Mental Health Run was one example of what becomes possible when different stakeholders come together around a shared purpose. The conversations, performances, and community engagement created opportunities to make mental health more understandable and encourage people to support one another.

But the work continues beyond one day.

It lives in the conversations we have, the stigma we challenge, the people we listen to, and the connections we build across our communities.

At BaNgaAfayo, we remain committed to supporting children and young people through our Cradle-to-Career approach while recognizing that lasting change depends on collective effort.

Because building a healthier, more empowered Kayunga is not about one organization doing everything. It is about all of us bringing something to the table, showing up for one another, and working together to help our community thrive.
