Sport for Change

Sport is mentioned in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a unifying force and a vehicle for inclusion which contributes to peace, the empowerment of women and of young people, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda harnesses the power of sport to create positive change in the lives of disadvantaged young people in the rural and marginalized communities where we work. BaNgaAfayo’s work helps to make young people and their communities healthier, safer and more successful.

Why Sport

Sport is energetic, inclusive and enjoyable, but BaNgaAfayo’s goal isn’t just about having fun. BaNgaAfayo believes in the power of sport to transform lives and to broaden ambitions. Sport teaches key skills such as teamwork, understanding and self-discipline, brings people together, creates pride in a community, breaks down social boundaries, and inspires people to make a difference in their own lives and for others. Through sport, we can empower young people to kick-start a cycle of positive change that echoes throughout their entire community.

The Big Sister Project

We know that everyone has a unique journey into sport and exercise so with a helping hand from teenage girls, The Big Sister Project is here to help girls discover their own journey into getting active.

Our latest research tells us that just over a million teenage girls are disengaging from sport after primary school. Complex and deep-rooted negative beliefs around periods, body image and self-belief are affecting girls’ enjoyment of sport and exercise.

  • 50% of girls lack self-belief when taking part in sport.
  • 45% of girls don’t feel that they have the right body shape to participate in sport.
  • 7/10 girls told us that they avoid exercise when on their periods.

This amazing program provides a supportive space with resources to inspire teenage girls to find and reclaim the joy of sport and exercise during puberty.
