This FAQ section provides answers to common questions about volunteering with us, including who can apply, the types of opportunities available, placement duration, and what to expect when working alongside our local teams.
We welcome international volunteers who are passionate about community-led development, education, youth empowerment, mental health, arts, sports for development, and digital skills. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and willing to work respectfully alongside local teams and communities.
International volunteers can support areas such as early childhood learning, education support, digital and STEM education, creative arts, sports for development, monitoring and evaluation, communications, and organizational capacity building. Roles are skills-based and designed to strengthen local capacity.
Our work is based in Kayunga District, Uganda, centered around our community center and surrounding rural communities.
Volunteer placements typically range from 2 weeks to 3 months, depending on the role and availability. Longer-term or remote support opportunities may also be considered based on skills and organizational needs.
Some roles require specific skills or professional experience, while others focus on motivation, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. All volunteers must be open to working in a community-led and culturally respectful environment.
No. Volunteering with Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda is unpaid. International volunteers contribute a modest participation fee, part of which covers breakfast and lunch during working days. Volunteers are responsible for their own accommodation, dinner, visas, insurance, travel, and other personal expenses.
We can recommend safe and affordable local accommodation options near our community center, but volunteers are responsible for arranging and paying for their own housing.
Volunteers should budget for flights, accommodation, meals, local transport, visa fees, travel insurance, vaccinations, and personal expenses.
Yes. International volunteers are required to obtain the appropriate Ugandan visa before arrival. We will provide guidance and supporting documentation once you are accepted.
The safety and wellbeing of volunteers, children, and communities is a priority. We follow safeguarding policies and community protocols, and volunteers receive orientation on safety, conduct, and cultural expectations.
Some roles involve direct engagement with children and youth. All volunteers working with children must comply with our child safeguarding policy and code of conduct.
Volunteers receive an orientation upon arrival, ongoing supervision from local staff, and support to help them integrate into the community and their role.

Yes. Some roles, such as communications, digital support, curriculum development, and fundraising, may be available remotely depending on current needs.
Our work is place-based and community-led. Volunteers support existing local initiatives rather than replacing local staff, ensuring that skills, leadership, and impact remain within the community long after the placement ends.
