Mental Fitness & Resilience

At BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda, mental health is central to all our programs.

Children and youth in rural Kayunga District face complex and overlapping challenges that place their mental health at risk. Poverty, disrupted education, HIV-related stigma, gender-based violence, displacement, and limited access to psychosocial services create constant emotional strain. Many young people experience trauma, anxiety, grief, and low self-esteem, yet mental health support is often unavailable, inaccessible, or stigmatized in rural communities.

Without safe spaces to express emotions or trusted adults to support them, distress can manifest as school dropout, risky behavior, isolation, or poor health outcomes. For survivors of violence and young people living with HIV, the absence of trauma-informed care deepens vulnerability and limits their ability to heal, learn, and thrive. Mental health challenges, when unaddressed, reinforce cycles of poverty, exclusion, and lost potential.

Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda responds by placing mental health and psychosocial support at the center of community life. Through our community center and outreach safe spaces, we provide accessible, child-friendly, and stigma-free support that meets children and youth where they are.

Our approach integrates creative therapies (art, music, dance, drama), counseling, peer support, sports, and mindfulness to help young people process trauma, build resilience, and regain confidence. Mental health support is embedded across education, skills development, child protection, and health programs, ensuring holistic care rather than isolated interventions.

By combining healing with learning, creativity, and community engagement, we help children and youth recover emotionally, stay in school, make positive life choices, and build pathways toward healthier, more hopeful futures.

Our Programs

Our mental health programs combine creative expression, counseling, and therapeutic activities to support emotional wellbeing, confidence, and life skills.

Music, Dance, & Drama

Music, dance, and drama offer youth a safe way to express emotions and explore their experiences. Performing and creating together builds confidence, teamwork, and self-esteem. These activities also provide an outlet for stress relief and emotional growth.

Art Therapy

Art therapy allows children and youth to communicate feelings they cannot always put into words. Drawing, painting, and other creative activities help them process trauma and manage anxiety. Through art, participants develop emotional awareness and build resilience in a supportive environment.

Recreational & Therapeutic Activities

Sports, play, and mindfulness exercises give youth safe ways to release stress and stay physically and emotionally healthy. These activities encourage teamwork, leadership, and positive peer relationships. They also complement counseling and creative programs by promoting overall well-being.

Counseling, Peer Support, & Survivor Care

Individual and group counseling, combined with peer support, helps youth manage emotions, develop coping skills, and make positive choices. For survivors of gender-based violence and young people living with HIV, trauma-informed care, safe spaces, and psychosocial support provide stability, healing, and a sense of belonging.
