Vanessa’s Story: Building Confidence and Resilience Through Creative Expression

Vanessa is an adolescent girl from Nakaziba village in Kayunga, raised by her grandmother after growing up without knowing her biological parents. From an early age, her grandmother became her strongest pillar, providing care, guidance, and making sacrifices to pay for her school fees and meet her basic needs.

Like many rural schools in Kayunga, Vanessa’s school had limited resources. Access to technology, creative spaces, and emotional support systems was minimal. These challenges, combined with questions about identity and belonging, affected her confidence and mental well-being as she grew up.

Joining BaNgaAfayo Community Center

Vanessa learned about BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda through a community announcement and decided to join. When she arrived at the center, she discovered several programs designed to support youth development. She initially chose the computer program because she had never had access to computers at school and wanted to gain skills for her future.

As she became more comfortable at the center, Vanessa later joined the music and dance program. At the time, she was quiet, reserved, and struggling internally, though she did not always have words to express what she was feeling.

Music and Dance as a Path to Healing

Through regular music and dance sessions, Vanessa found something she had been missing: a safe space to express herself. Music and movement became a way for her to release stress, process emotions, and connect with others.

Over time, facilitators and peers noticed changes. Vanessa became more confident, more open, and more willing to participate. Rehearsals helped her build discipline and teamwork, while creative expression supported her mental and emotional well-being. What she could not easily say out loud, she began to express through song and dance.

Vanessa as a Teen Teacher

Vanessa’s growth does not end with music and dance. The confidence, communication skills, and emotional awareness she developed through music and dance prepared her for leadership. Recognizing her progress and commitment, BaNgaAfayo supported her to join the Magical Classrooms program as a teen teacher.

In this role, Vanessa supports younger children in early learning spaces, helping them sing, learn letters and numbers, and feel safe and encouraged. She assists facilitators, leads simple activities, and serves as a positive role model for children who are just beginning their learning journey.

Being a teen teacher has strengthened Vanessa’s leadership skills, patience, and sense of responsibility. Standing in front of younger children and guiding activities has further built her confidence and reinforced her belief that she can make a difference. Magical Classrooms has also helped her develop empathy and communication skills, as she understands the importance of nurturing young minds with care and encouragement.

Through this program, Vanessa is no longer only a beneficiary. She has become a contributor — giving back the support, creativity, and hope that once helped her heal.

From Practice to Performance: From Here We Rise

As the music and dance program continued, youth were encouraged to develop their own creative pieces. Vanessa became part of this process, contributing to performances that reflected their shared experiences and growth.

The From Here We Rise Concert became a defining moment in her journey. Created as a one-time event, the concert gave children and youth the opportunity to present what they had been working on and to be celebrated by their community.

For Vanessa, stepping onto the stage was more than performing. It was a moment of courage. In front of an audience, she showcased not only her talent, but also the confidence and resilience she had built through the program. The applause and encouragement affirmed her sense of self-worth and belonging.

Impact and Learning

Vanessa’s story shows how music and dance can support mental health, especially for youth facing complex life circumstances. Through the program and the From Here We Rise Concert, she gained confidence, emotional strength, and a sense of purpose.

Her journey also highlights the power of place. By creating opportunities within Kayunga, BaNgaAfayo ensured that youth like Vanessa did not have to leave their community to grow. Instead, they rose from within it, surrounded by support and belief.

Conclusion

Vanessa’s experience reflects the wider impact of BaNgaAfayo’s integrated approach to youth development. Music and dance supported her mental and emotional well-being. The From Here We Rise Concert gave her a platform to be seen, heard, and celebrated. Magical Classrooms allowed her to step into leadership and service.

Together, these opportunities show what is possible when creativity, education, and emotional support come together within a community.

From here, she rose and now she helps others rise too.
