The From Here We Rise Concert was a powerful moment at BaNgaAfayo Community Center, created as an opportunity for children in our music and dance program to present, perform, and be celebrated. But this concert was more than a performance. It was the visible outcome of months of healing, growth, and resilience built through music and movement.

At BaNgaAfayo, mental health and emotional wellbeing are a core focus of our work with children in rural communities. Many of the children we serve face daily challenges linked to poverty, loss, and the impact of HIV. These realities often leave children withdrawn, anxious, or unsure of themselves. Music and dance have become one of the most effective ways we support them, offering a safe and joyful outlet to process emotions and build inner strength.
As children practiced singing and dancing, they were not just learning routines. They were learning how to cope, collaborate, and express what they feel. Over time, confidence grew. Friendships formed. Emotions that were once held inside began to flow through rhythm, lyrics, and movement.
The From Here We Rise Concert brought this journey to life. Children stepped onto the stage to perform original songs, dances, and creative pieces they had developed themselves. For many, it was their first time performing in front of an audience. What we witnessed was transformation. Nervous faces turned into proud smiles. Hesitant steps became bold movements. Quiet voices rose with confidence.
The event created a powerful sense of affirmation. Being applauded, seen, and celebrated reinforced the message that these children matter and that their talents, stories, and emotions are worth sharing. This kind of positive recognition plays a critical role in strengthening self-esteem and emotional wellbeing.
The concert also reflected the power of place. By hosting the event within Kayunga, children were able to rise from within their own community, surrounded by families, peers, and local leaders who believe in them. Opportunity did not require leaving home. It was created right where they are.
Throughout the event, moments of reflection and praise gently pointed children to God’s love and the purpose behind their God given gifts, offering hope and grounding without overshadowing the inclusive nature of the program.
From Here We Rise was not just a celebration of talent. It was a declaration of what is possible when children are supported holistically. The concert showed how music and dance can nurture mental wellbeing, unlock confidence, and turn creativity into a source of healing and hope.
From that stage in Kayunga, children did more than perform.
They rose.
