How STEAM Programs Improve Career Readiness: Juma’s Story

Juma is a youth from Kayunga with big dreams but limited opportunities. After failing to complete Senior 4 due to school fees and other challenges, he felt uncertain about his future and unsure how to turn his potential into a meaningful path.

Before joining our programs, life was challenging for Juma. He lacked access to practical skills training and career guidance, had limited exposure to technology and creative learning opportunities, and struggled with low confidence about his future.

Everything began to change when Juma came to BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda’s community center. This is where the power of place became real for him a safe and supportive environment where he felt welcomed, mentored, and encouraged to believe in himself again. In that space, he found belonging, direction, and the courage to rebuild his future.

Among the programs offered, he chose the Graphic Design class under the STEAM program. At first, digital tools and design software felt overwhelming. But with mentorship and hands-on practice, he gradually built his skills and confidence.

The program gave Juma more than technical skills. It strengthened his discipline, problem-solving abilities, and professional mindset while preparing him for real-world work. Through mentorship and project-based learning, he developed the confidence and career readiness needed to turn his skills into income.

Today, Juma is able to apply his knowledge professionally, take on freelance design projects, and earn a living.

A Letter of Gratitude from Juma

“I am deeply grateful to everyone at BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda. When I first came here, I had failed to complete school and felt lost about my future. You gave me guidance, mentorship, and a chance to learn skills that I now use to support myself. More than that, you welcomed me as part of a family. The encouragement and care I received helped me rebuild my confidence and believe in myself again. I will always consider BaNgaAfayo as my second home, and I hope to inspire other young people the way you inspired me.”

Helping Youth Succeed in Career and Post-Secondary Pathways

Many factors shape a young person’s success in building a meaningful career: gaining practical skills, accessing mentorship, and developing confidence. At BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda, our STEAM programs provide all of this helping youth turn their potential into real opportunities. As Juma shares, “You gave me guidance, mentorship, and a chance to learn skills that I now use to support myself. More than that, you welcomed me as part of a family.”

At BaNgaAfayo, youth engage in hands-on STEAM projects, mentorship, and career guidance that connect learning to real-world opportunities. This approach strengthens not only technical skills but also discipline, problem-solving, and professional mindset preparing them to turn their skills into income and independence.

Programs also support post-secondary planning, whether through vocational training, apprenticeships, college, or other opportunities. Many youth are first-generation learners or come from households with limited exposure to higher education and professional pathways. With guidance on applications, scholarships, and career planning, youth gain the confidence to pursue their ambitions.

Juma’s journey shows the power of this support: mentorship, practical learning, and a safe, encouraging environment helped him develop the skills and confidence to start earning as a freelance designer building both his future and his independence.
