In the quiet mornings of rural Kayunga, while most teenagers are just waking up, Mary is already up—sweeping the compound, fetching water, and helping her family in the garden. But her day doesn’t end there. With determination in her step, she sets off on a long walk to the BaNgaAfayo Community Center, where she becomes something extraordinary: a Teen Teacher.
At just 16, Mary has taken on a powerful role, volunteering her time to teach and mentor younger children who otherwise have no access to early learning. Through play-based activities, storytelling, and songs, she helps spark curiosity, build confidence, and lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
Mary is part of Ba Nga Afayo’s Teen Teacher Program, a peer-led initiative that equips local youth with the tools and training to serve as early childhood educators in their own communities. Many of these young leaders come from the very same backgrounds as the children they support, facing poverty, long distances to school, and limited resources. But instead of being held back, they rise up to lift others.
These teen teachers are more than volunteers. They are role models, bridging the gap between dreams and opportunity. For children in rural Kayunga, they are often the first introduction to structured learning. For themselves, it’s a chance to grow, lead, and imagine a new future.
Through our Teen Teacher Series, we will be sharing the stories of these incredible young people, like Mary—who are transforming lives every day through their compassion, courage, and commitment.
