How Table Tennis Is Opening New Possibilities for Young People in Kayunga

Sport is more than entertainment. For young people in rural Kayunga, it can be a pathway to confidence, opportunity, and a bigger vision for the future.

At BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda, we use Sport for Change to help children and young people develop skills, build confidence, discover their talents, and see possibilities beyond the communities where they grow up. Sport is not only about winning games it is about creating opportunities for young people to learn, connect, and believe in what they can achieve.

Taking Talent Beyond Kayunga

Recently, our BaNgaAfayo table tennis team from Kayunga had the opportunity to compete in the Seroma Open, joining hundreds of participants from across Uganda.

The tournament attracted 281 entries across ten categories, including junior, open, veteran, and team competitions.

For our girls and boys, stepping onto the table tennis court was about more than competition. It was an opportunity to experience a larger sporting environment, meet other young athletes, test their skills, and discover what is possible when they are given access to opportunities beyond their immediate community.

And they have already started winning games!

Sport as a Pathway to Opportunity

For children growing up in rural communities, opportunities to participate in organized sport and compete outside their communities can be limited.

That is why our Sport for Change approach goes beyond physical activity. Through sport, young people develop teamwork, discipline, confidence, leadership, communication, and resilience skills that can support them both on and off the court.

Participation in events such as the Seroma Open also allows young people to see different pathways for their future. A competition can introduce them to new people, new environments, new ambitions, and opportunities they may not have imagined before.

For some, that may mean pursuing sport more seriously. For others, it may inspire them to work harder in school, explore scholarships, develop new skills, or simply believe that their background does not have to determine the size of their dreams.

Creating Bigger Dreams

At BaNgaAfayo, we believe that where a child is born should not limit what they can become. Our Cradle-to-Career approach connects opportunities in education, health, employment, empowerment, and sport to help rural children and young people build pathways toward their future.

The table tennis team’s participation in the Seroma Open is one example of what this can look like in practice.

Today, they are competing.

Tomorrow, they may be pursuing scholarships, representing their communities, developing careers, or inspiring another young person to dream bigger.

The game may end when the final point is played, but the possibilities it creates can go much further.

At BaNgaAfayo, we will continue using sport to open doors, build confidence, and help young people in Kayunga discover what is possible.

Because sometimes, changing a child’s future begins with giving them the opportunity to play.
