[VIDEO] How rural youth are making menstrual health more accessible

For many girls in rural Kayunga, menstruation remains a barrier to education. The high cost of sanitary pads forces some girls to miss school or use unsafe alternatives, affecting their health, confidence, and ability to learn.

At BaNgaAfayo, we believe no girl should have to choose between managing her period and pursuing her education.

Through our Fashion and Tailoring Program, young people learn practical tailoring skills while producing safe, affordable, and reusable sanitary pads. School holidays provide an opportunity for even more youth to take part in hands-on training, strengthening their skills while creating products that help girls stay in school.

Beyond tailoring, participants develop confidence, leadership, teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. They also discover that their talents can address real community challenges while preparing them for future employment and entrepreneurship.

The impact extends far beyond the training. Girls gain access to reusable sanitary pads that enable them to manage their periods with dignity and attend school consistently. Families benefit from an affordable, long-lasting alternative to disposable pads, reducing household expenses, while communities become more informed about menstrual health and work together to break the stigma surrounding menstruation. The use of reusable pads also contributes to a cleaner environment by reducing menstrual waste.

This program reflects BaNgaAfayo’s Cradle to Career approach, which equips children and young people with the skills, opportunities, and support they need to thrive. Every reusable sanitary pad produced represents more than menstrual protection it represents a girl staying in school, a young person building a brighter future, and a community taking another step toward lasting change.
