Empowering Rural Youth to Say No to Alcohol

On the 14th of May 2026, at #BaNgaAfayo Initiative Uganda, with support from Astrazeneca Young Health Program, we conducted a Peer Educators Training under the Youth Against Alcohol Campaign aimed at empowering rural young people to make healthier and more responsible life choices.

During the session, youth were educated about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and its impact on physical health, mental wellbeing, education, relationships, and future opportunities. Discussions highlighted diseases and health complications linked to alcohol abuse, including liver disease, depression, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and unwanted pregnancies caused by risky behaviors and poor decision-making.

The training also focused on how peer-educators can become positive role models in their communities by guiding fellow youth, raising awareness, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and influencing others to stay away from alcohol and other harmful behaviors. Through peer-to-peer mentorship, young people can use their voices and experiences to inspire change and build stronger, healthier communities.

Beyond awareness, the training encouraged rural youth to engage in positive activities such as education, sports, entrepreneurship, leadership, and community engagement as healthier alternatives that contribute to personal growth and wellbeing.

It was inspiring to see rural young people actively participate, ask questions, and openly discuss the challenges affecting their lives and communities. Through mentorship and awareness programs like these, we continue creating safe spaces where youth can learn, grow, and make informed decisions for a better future.
