How Football Is Supporting Education and Life Choices for Rural Youth

In rural communities in Kayunga District, many children and young people, especially girls, struggle to stay in school due to challenges linked to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Teenage pregnancy, HIV-related stigma, and early marriage continue to disrupt education, leading to absenteeism, school dropout, and low completion rates. Football for Change addresses these challenges by embedding SRHR education directly into football activities that young people enjoy and trust.

Through structured and interactive football drills, the program integrates lessons on teenage pregnancy prevention, HIV and STI awareness, gender equality, consent, and decision-making. These messages are reinforced through reflection sessions led by trained peer educators, helping participants understand how their health choices directly affect their education and future opportunities. Learning in a relaxed and engaging environment increases understanding and retention of key messages.

The program creates safe spaces where girls can participate confidently, build leadership skills, and stay engaged in learning. Schools and communities involved in Football for Change report improved attendance, stronger commitment to education, and greater confidence among participants, especially girls.

We are grateful to the FIFA Foundation Community Programme for their support, which has made it possible to deliver Football for Change and strengthen education outcomes for children and young people in rural communities.
