At Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda, we are deeply committed to transforming education for children in rural communities. Recently, in partnership with TATCO Uganda and with the generous support of Global Fund for Children, we hosted our second two-day teacher workshop at our community center in Kayunga District. This workshop focused on integrating play into rural classrooms, creating more dynamic learning environments for children. Special sessions were also dedicated to supporting teachers in managing children’s mental health and improving their lesson planning and scheming skills.
Managing children’s mental health is a central focus of our educational initiatives, as we recognize the profound impact mental well-being has on a child’s ability to learn and thrive. During the workshop, teachers were trained to identify early signs of stress, trauma, or emotional difficulties that children may experience, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds. By equipping educators with the tools to support mental health in the classroom, we aim to create a safe, nurturing environment where children feel emotionally secure and are better able to engage with their education.
These workshops are an essential component of our broader mission to revolutionize education in Kayunga. Over the years, we have provided scholarships and free school supplies to ensure that children have the resources they need to thrive. However, we recognized that a more holistic approach was necessary to create lasting change. This realization inspired us to move beyond material support and focus on empowering teachers and fostering creative, inclusive classrooms where children can excel.
Our multidimensional strategy prioritizes place-based learning, where local context and the community’s unique needs are integrated into the educational experience. By incorporating play and creativity into the curriculum, we are nurturing not only academic success but also emotional and social well-being. This approach is particularly critical for underserved children, who often face significant challenges in their personal lives that can affect their ability to learn.
Through ongoing collaborations with partners like TATCO Uganda and the Global Fund for Children, we are committed to enhancing learning outcomes and creating a brighter future for the children of Kayunga. Together, we are laying the groundwork for an education system that addresses the full spectrum of children’s needs, from mental health support to skill development, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
