I am trying to write my future but my hand is too shaky, I need someone to help me steady it.
One of the goals of BaNgaAfayo (Show you Care) Initiative Uganda is to educate economically disadvantaged children from the lowest level of education (kindergarten) to the highest levels of education (university or a vocational institute).
Ssebijjuguli Michael (in the picture above) is a 13 year old boy in primary seven and one of the ten children at home. Only three of the children in his family have managed to go school and even then it has been a hard time achieving this. Michael comes back from school at 5pm, changes into his digging clothes and heads for the garden where he digs till 7pm, after which he goes back home and tries to read. Being in a grade that needs one’s total concentration to pass finals and be able to join high school doesn’t stop him from digging because he needs that money for school fees. Imagine walking from school coupled with two hours’ digging, how will such a child concentrate on school work/homework. This is the daily not occasional life of Michael which can be changed.
He wants to become a doctor… asked why, he smiles and brightly says he wants to know the feel of injecting someone.
If getting school fees at his primary level of education is a major problem, how much greater will it be when he joins high school. Sometimes, say most times Michael joins school weeks after his friends have done so because the school fees hasn’t been got. Still he’s grateful for the chance he has got to go school and we hope to keep it that way. He wants to become a doctor… asked why, he smiles and brightly says he wants to know the feel of injecting someone. BaNgaAfayo with the help of a few sponsors has provided Michael with writing materials but he is one child among so many others.
All we are asking is to help us help children like Michael write their future…sponsor a child, donate something because we can do more together…..
