Health & Wellness

The cycle of poverty is an interconnected mix of factors that imprisons entire communities for generations. While it’s difficult to unwind every element of poverty, one thing stands out — health conditions and access to health care play a huge factor in a community’s poverty rate. Children where we work live without access to basic health necessities such as clean water and sanitation. Health issues often cause children to fall behind in school, and a lack of education leads the way for drug use, early pregnancy and gang affiliation.

Key focus areas

Your gift, or sponsorship, helps children in our communities by providing health programs that focus on four important things:

  • Developing healthy habits
  • Providing correct & accurate knowledge
  • Connecting children & youth with services
  • Promoting mental health and emotional well-being

Support our
health programs

We don’t just address the symptoms of poverty. We battle the root cause by providing education on preventable health issues and offering mental health support to children in our communities.

Health & Wellness Programs

These programs develop children, youth & young women’s knowledge and capacity to engage in positive behaviors to nurture their well-being, live healthy lives and know their rights.

Safe Water & Sanitation

We aim to achieve significant and lasting improvements in the lives of children through provision of services like; access to safe water, adoption of new hygiene behaviors etc.

Mental Health

Supporting the mental health of children and youth is more important than ever.
We are empowering children and GBV survivors with skills to manage their emotions and build resiliency.

Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights

BaNgaAfayo works to ensure that adolescents and young people have access to adequate and accurate information and friendly health services.

HIV/AIDS Awareness, Prevention

We are implementing a project to provide correct knowledge, attitude and skills for preventing and reducing HIV infections among adolescents especially girls and young women.

Menstrual Health Management

We are working to make sure no girl misses school, just because they are in their periods. With access to clean water, good toilets and sanitary pads, girls can continue to to attend school even during their periods.

We work towards the survival and well-being of the world’s most vulnerable children and families, through service provision and sensitization.

Mental Health

Our mental health program is central to all our efforts, providing comprehensive support to children, youth and young women at our multipurpose community center in Kayunga district of Uganda. We offer individual and group counseling, peer support groups, and life skills training, helping participants manage their emotions and build resilience. We also educate the community on mental health and HIV, aiming to reduce stigma and promote awareness.

We train youth to become peer educators so they can become change agents and ensure sustainable, community-driven care. Our program includes recreational and therapeutic activities, such as play and sport, as well as mindfulness practices, to support emotional healing.

For survivors of gender-based violence and rape, we provide safe spaces, trauma-informed care, and legal assistance. Our community center is a safe haven where all individuals can seek support and healing.

Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda’s mental health program is special because it is community-driven and developed based on the needs of the children, youth, and young women we serve.
