Child & Maternal Health

No child should die from preventable diseases. We focus not only on the treatment of malnutrition and disease, but also on preventing them from ever occurring in the first place. We believe an investment in health care – especially maternal and child health – is vital to prevent illness and disability in children.

Our Aim

We also believe that a healthy population is a productive one; better able to move out of poverty and towards a prosperous future. We train Community Health Volunteers to screen children in their locality for the most common illnesses – malaria, diarrhoea, and respiratory infections – and equip them to provide either basic treatment or referral to a clinic.

Our community health systems focus on women, newborns, and young children (particularly during the critical first 1,000 days of their lives) to both prevent and treat malnutrition.

Give to ensure
a healthy start in life

BaNgaAfayo recognizes that the health of the mother and the child cannot be separated. Providing newborns with optimal nutrition and the access to essential care ensures a healthy start in life.

Child & Maternal Health Programs

Through our activities, we seek to improve care around the time of birth and after birth to save the lives of women and newborns.

Prematurity is the leading cause of newborn deaths, yet many preterm births can be prevented or managed with feasible, cost-effective solutions.

Male partners and families play an important role in maternal reproductive health as they can provide a supportive environment for women and girls seeking care.

Approximately 21 million adolescent girls (ages 15–19) become pregnant every year, affecting their education and long-term economic opportunities.

Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) Trainings

TBAs are a critical and underutilized component within the Ugandan health system, and we believe that by helping to strengthen the first responders’ abilities to detect danger signs, advice on health behaviors and choices, provide quality medical referrals, and collect accurate data throughout remote villages, we can maximize our impact. We are training over 100 TBAs in detecting health complications, maternal health education, and recording maternal health indicators for families. We are also equipping TBAs with monitoring and evaluation tools such as home registries to track and report maternal health indicators.

Prevention of preterm births

Prematurity is the leading cause of newborn deaths, yet many preterm births can be prevented or managed with feasible, cost-effective solutions. Through our activities, we seek to reduce preterm birth rates; to reduce the enormous health and social inequalities and impact of premature birth on children and their families by ensuring the best possible treatment, care, and support and to improve the situation of mothers and the long-term health of preterm infants and newborns with illnesses.

Engagement of Men & Communities

Male partners and families play an important role in maternal reproductive health as they can provide a supportive environment for women and girls seeking care. We use a gender-transformative approach to change attitudes and gender norms among men and communities to empower women and girls to use maternal reproductive health services. This encourages the adoption of healthy behaviors and norms, and generates demand for family planning and maternal health services, particularly in underserved communities and among adolescents.

Support For Teen Mothers

Approximately 21 million adolescent girls (ages 15–19) become pregnant every year, affecting their education and long-term economic opportunities. Our sexual and reproductive health (SRH) programs focus on supporting married and parenting adolescents to ensure that they and their children receive adequate health and social support during their pregnancy, childbirth, and after delivery to enhance their quality of life.
