Transformative Theater: Ba Nga Afayo Tackles Period Poverty on International Self-Care Day

July 26th was the commemoration of The 2nd International Self-Care Day in Uganda, Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda proudly participated as one of the selected implementing partners and exhibitors in a significant event held in Kayunga District. This day, dedicated to the importance of self-care, provided a unique platform for our peer educators, trained as youth advocates during the HerVoice Fund project, to highlight critical issues affecting rural girls, particularly concerning menstrual health and gender-based violence (GBV).

Through the powerful medium of drama, our peer educators presented an emotional play that shed light on the harsh realities faced by many schoolgirls. The story revolved around a young girl who, unable to obtain money for sanitary pads from her parents, seeks help from an older man. This man, instead of offering assistance, exploits her vulnerability, rapes her, and infects her with HIV. Her subsequent struggle to find justice and access youth-friendly health services emotionally depicted the systemic failures in hospitals, law enforcement, and inadequate laws addressing GBV.

The play not only exposed these hash realities but also served as a catalyst for awareness and discussion. It highlighted the urgent need for better support systems and reinforced our commitment to fighting period poverty in rural and marginalized communities of Uganda.

Following the performance, our peer educators seized the opportunity to provide practical lessons on making washable sanitary pads using locally available resources. These hands-on sessions empowered fellow girls with the knowledge and skills to manage their menstrual health sustainably, thereby addressing period poverty directly.

Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda remains dedicated to improving the lives of rural girls through education, advocacy, and practical solutions. Our involvement in the International Self-Care Day event is a testament to our ongoing efforts to create lasting change and support the well-being of our communities.

Join us in our mission to fight period poverty and advocate for the rights and health of girls in Uganda. Together, we can make a difference.
